Aging Summit 2014

2014 Aging Summit: Creating a Safe and Caring Community

Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Dianne Jacob and Supervisor Greg Cox are hosting the “Aging Summit,” coordinated by Aging & Independence Services (AIS), with the goal of bringing forward relevant and timely topics in the field of aging.

The theme this year – “Creating a Safe and Caring Community” -- embraces aspects of safety, as well as concerns of caregivers.

Thursday, June 12, 2014

Time: 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM

Location: Town & Country Convention Center
500 Hotel Circle North
San Diego 92108

This event is FREE.

We plan to present the focus of “safety” broadly, including such issues as:

  • Financial abuse prevention (scams, fraud)
  • Elder abuse prevention (physical, emotional, neglect)
  • Disaster preparedness
  • Fall prevention
  • Self-defense training
  • Cyber security
  • How technology can help keep people safe
  • General home safeguards (smoke detectors, etc.)
  • Suicide prevention
Our keynote speaker, author and journalist Gail Sheehy, will address challenges caregivers face. She cared for her ill husband for several years, then wrote “Passages for Caregivers.” She’ll share what she has learned from her caregiving experiences, and from caregivers who have contacted her.

The summit will also include additional information for family caregivers, particularly those dealing with the challenges of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

Keynote Speaker

Gail Sheehy

Best-Selling Author of ‘Passages’

As the best-selling author of 15 books, including Passages, Gail Sheehy has rocked the culture and changed the way millions of women and men around the world look at the stages of their lives.

Sheehy's revolutionary Passages (1976) remained on The New York Times Bestseller List for more than three years and has been reprinted in 28 languages. A Library of Congress survey named Passages one of the ten most influential books of our time.  In New Passages and Understanding Men's Passages (1995) she revisited the stages of adult life and mapped out a completely new frontier entitled "second adulthood."

As a literary journalist, Gail Sheehy was one of the original contributors to New York Magazine. A contributing editor to Vanity Fair since 1984, she won the Washington Journalism Review Award for Best Magazine Writer in America for her in-depth character portraits of national and world leaders, including both Presidents Bush, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Margaret Thatcher, Saddam Hussein, and Mikhail Gorbachev. She is a seven time recipient of the New York Newswomen's Club Front Page Award for distinguished journalism.

One of the most popular speakers on the lecture circuit, Gail Sheehy offers dynamic programs based on her groundbreaking investigations and observations of the lives of men and women within different phases of their lives and how they can enjoy them to the fullest.
